TV and Broadband companies that supply you a connection to the internet are attacking the openness of the internet.  They want the ability to make some websites load slower than other websites and the ability to even restrict access to websites unless you pay for it.

They want to change the way people use the internet. They want to change the model to a more controlled model so that they can make more money. Imagine having to pay to go to Facebook each month alongside your already extremely hefty monthly internet access charge.

They want to make the model more like how TV is done. They want to charge you per website to get access to them. There are so many websites out there that this would be nearly impossible and would do nothing but slow down progress.

I believe that this is wrong on so many levels and it’s the reason why I support a free and open internet.

I was watching a video of an interview of Steve Wozniak talking about internet freedom and he makes so many great points about the internet. There’s the video below if you missed it. I’m not sure how old it is but it’s great either way.

Back in August of 2012 Wikileaks went down for almost a week because they reported a leak about how our government has been spying on us. If you’ve heard of TrapWire it was leaked from Wikileaks.

Why was Wikileaks down? They were suffering from DDoS attacks. It’s a sad coincidence how they are bombarded by DDoS attacks right after they leak information about the government spying on people.

TrapWire is a spying network that the Government has deployed all over the country. Remember how your grandma was afraid the Government was spying on her? Well, she’s right. There are cameras all over the country that the Government’s TrapWire Network has access to.

President Obama forced an Executive order into place that is giving him the power to shut off the internet and all wireless communication in times of crisis. What type of Crisis could warrant turning off the internet for millions of people around the country? You would think in times of Crisis that having the internet on and active would be beneficial.

I don’t think that anyone should have that much control over the internet. I think that the internet should remain free of government control.

The way that you can help to keep the internet free is to talk to your local Governor, Senators, and anyone else in government. You need to let them know that you want to keep the internet free.

I’ll leave you today with this quote from Benjamin Franklin.

“Those who would Sacrifice Freedom for Security Deserve Neither”
